Now, it's certainly possible, if unlikely, that the ship could suffer an internal explosion, say from the engines blowing out or whatever, but that's still not going to disintegrate the ship. You know how nuclear missiles work? It's literally impossible to set them off by shooting them, even with the much more fragile tech base we have IRL, let alone whatever quasi-magical future tech is in Star Wars. I mean, it was a fish in a barrel situation basically and they just essentially let it slip through!ĭo. And they would turn all their attention on that ship to stop it because it's not like the Hutts are just gonna shrug this off or be happy about this outcome.

Point is that reinforcements came in and chased off Tarkin and the others, meaning that the enemy lines (Which, if I may remind you, were already causing Tarkin issues even before the reinforcements came) leftover from the battle, that the ship had to go through to reach the shipyard, had a free target to take out before it took out their objective (Defending the shipyard). Or it would hit the engines, making them explode in a ball of fire that takes out the whole ship. Some of the pieces/parts could still continue on and hit the shipyard, but that would still be much less damage done to the shipyard unless the ship part(s) that hit the shipyard contain the unjostled and unhit nuclear arsenal in which case it would receive comparable levels of damage to here. Or it would break up the ship even further, thereby sending pieces/parts spiraling or drifting off into space away from the shipyard.

It matters if it was shot full of holes because such holes or hits would likely set off the nuclear arsenal in the ship before it even got close to the shipyard thereby keeping the shipyard in shape or with minimal damage done to it.
